I met KATCHANA THALPAWILA, designer from Sri Lanka, at the Pure London 2011 show and her line of fashion attracted my attention by her extensively wide – flying - trousers that contrary to other designs of that type, gave impression of daring freedom. Not at all provoking attitude towards the world, but rather spreading the playfulness, so that everybody would tune up to such vibes for a small fraction of time. And by rights, because when you meet her in person, you feel her eagerness to bring the best from Sri Lanka's traditional craftsmanship and her own innovativeness to our disposition.
KT BROWN ktbrown.biz
One of Sri Lanka's first luxury brands KT Brown was launched in 2009 by Kanchana Thalpawila, a graduate of Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion. KT brown works with traditional and non traditional crafts people and seeks to integrate innovative local crafts with contemporary design. KT brown pushes the concept of making uncut garments using minimum seams to reduce waste, while creating shapes using traditional methods of pleating, pin tucking and gathering. All garments are exclusively hand-made at her studio in Colombo by a dedicated group of technicians.
Designer behind KT BROWN is KATCHANA THALPAWILA and her production team: photographs by Sanka Vidanagamage, styling by Jacquie Mei (Makeup box) and Roel Raymond as a model. You’re welcomed to contact her on email: KTBROWNATPSM@GMAIL.COM
